The Yiddish Alphabet

I have no real plan regarding this blog, so if I´m giving you now some links to learn the alphabet, this does not imply that the next post will build on the knowledge from the previous. :)

Let me tell you that it seems helpful in learning Yiddish to know
- the Yiddish alphabet
- the German language :D
- the Hebrew language
- some slavic language (Russian...)

If you start at level zero, go for the alphabet. It will come in handy with the Hebrew as well. ;)

The alphabet is called "Alef-Beys" because this is how the first two letters of the Yiddish alphabet are pronounced. There are minor differences between the Yiddish and the Hebrew alphabets.

You can learn it from the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research (a prestigious institution!). Here you can see how the letters are written (by hand) (link from Förderverein für Jiddische Sprache und Kultur e.V. Düsseldorf).

I will try and add a list with useful links, until I manage to do this, I recommend you to read Basic Facts about Yiddish (also from YIVO).

You don´t have to know German and Hebrew in order to be able to learn/understand Yiddish! It is just a lot easier, but it does not make it impossible for people who do not know German or Hebrew to be able to learn Yiddish.

Enjoy learning the Alef-Beys!

PS I have some troubles with the new blog, so I will put the page with useful links here, because I do not know better now. :=
